Biography

Gale Garmong, PharmD, TTS, is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the School of Pharmacy and an Academic Community Pharmacist at ACORx Pharmacy in Carnegie, PA, part of the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Care Network (PPCN/CPESN).

Dr. Garmong graduated with his PharmD from the LECOM School of Pharmacy at Erie in 2014 and completed a PGY1 Community Practice Residency with the University of Pittsburgh and Rite Aid Pharmacy from 2014-15. During his residency, in addition to his community pharmacy patient care and management experiences, he was a member of interprofessional teams at a family health center and a free clinic. Prior to joining the faculty in 2020, Dr. Garmong practiced as a travelling pharmacist in both traditional- and independent-chain community pharmacies, where he provided patient care while dispensing medications, as well as through Medication Therapy Management (MTM), transitions-of-care, immunization, and medication synchronization services. He also served as an Adjunct Instructor of Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.

Dr. Garmong enjoys getting to know students as they work to develop foundational patient care skills and begin to explore community pharmacy practice in his first-professional-year (PY1) courses, as well as coordinating PPCN training and teaching within community pharmacy electives in the PY3 year. He hosts APPE rotations at ACORx, where PY4 students gain experience providing community-based medication management and health promotion services.

Dr. Garmong is active in community pharmacy practice transformation efforts. He has served as a coach for the national "Flip the Pharmacy" program, which guides community pharmacy teams through adapting their workflows to move "beyond filling prescriptions at a moment in time, to caring for patients over time" as patient care opportunities grow in the community setting. He also serves as Duquesne’s ACT (Academia-Community Transformation) Pharmacy Collaborative champion—connecting these transformation efforts in practice with student pharmacists’ training—and as the advisor for Duquesne’s National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) student chapter.

Dr. Garmong's scholarly interests include interprofessional collaboration and implementation of enhanced services within community pharmacy, as well as teaching strategies to prepare students for practice in this environment. He is passionate about educating and mentoring student pharmacists by creating experiences that help them envision and grow professionally toward their future as collaborative patient care providers, servant-leaders, and advocates, inspired by our university’s Spiritan mission.
