Biography

Kathleen S. Hartzel is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Technology and Director of the MS in Information Systems Program in the Palumbo Donahue School of Business at Duquesne University. She teaches courses primarily in the areas of systems analysis and design, project management, and IS strategy.

Dr. Hartzel's research interests focus on computer-supported collaboration at both the organizational and group levels. Her research has appeared in a number of academic journals, including MIS Quarterly, Communications of the ACM, Journal of Management Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, and Journal of Computer Information Systems.

Dr. Hartzel established and advises the PMA (Project Management Association) student organization. Through her classes and interactions with the PMA, she encourages and supports students in pursuing the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) designation. In 2010, she created the Intercollegiate Project Management Triathlon, an annual event in which undergraduate student teams from universities throughout the country come to Duquesne to test their knowledge and skills in project management best practices.

Prior to joining the faculty, she held several positions as a systems analyst and programmer. For most of that time, she worked for Unisys Corporation. She holds a Ph.D. from the Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh and an M.S. from the Smeal College of Business at the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Hartzel is a member of APICS, the Association for Operations Management, and holds their CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management) and CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) certifications. She also is a member of PMI (Project Management Institute) where she earned their CAPM designation.

Profile Information

Research Interests

My research focuses on the use of information system technology in supporting collaborative efforts at the group and organizational levels. At the group level, I am exploring how the availability and use of technology affects behavior and attitudes in the areas of social responsibility and participation in social causes. At the organizational level, my interests focus on how inter-organizational information systems affect purchase decisions, supply chain performance, and demand planning.
