Timothy Evans

Tim Evans is an Assistant Professor in the School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University, joining the faculty in the fall of 2026. He earned his B.S. in Biochemistry from Slippery Rock University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duquesne University in the lab of Dr. Rita Mihailescu. During his time as a graduate student, Dr. Evans taught organic chemistry lab courses, which piqued his interest in teaching chemistry in higher education. After completing his graduate work, he became an Assistant Professor and the Biochemistry Program Director at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, and he began teaching various undergraduate chemistry courses. Dr. Evans has been honored with several University-level teaching awards, recognizing his dedication in undergraduate chemistry education. He has also served as an advisor for multiple undergraduate organizations, particularly the national award-winning American Chemical Society Student Affiliates at Duquesne.

Dr. Evans’ research background is in the chemistry of proteins though his current interests are focused on nucleic acids. His present research is focused on two three-dimensional shapes that can be formed by DNA and RNA, and formation of these shapes have been shown to regulate gene expression during the transcription and translation processes. In particular, he is interested in the G-quadruplex structure formed by guanine-rich sequences in DNA. Using biochemical and biophysical approaches, details such as structural stabilities and functional activity can be determined.
