President Ken Gormley has named April Barton, dean of the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University, the inaugural recipient of the Dean John J. Sciullo Award for Distinguished Academic Leadership, recognizing her exemplary service to the University and the law school community.

The award, established in memory of the late Dean John J. Sciullo, honors outstanding administrative leadership in legal education. Gormley presented Barton with the award as part a celebration with law faculty and alumni in the Gormley Law Library on Friday.

“Dean April Barton reflects the very best of Duquesne Kline Law School’s long tradition of excellence,” said Gormley. “As someone who knew and admired Dean Sciullo and learned a great deal from him during my early years as a faculty member, I’m particularly honored to present this inaugural award to Dean Barton. Her leadership has exemplified Dean Sciullo’s dedication and skill with respect to administrative duties while also reflecting his care and concern for all members of the law school community.”

Sciullo, who served as dean of the Duquesne Kline School of Law, was widely respected for his administrative acumen and commitment to students, faculty and alumni. His mentorship and advocacy left a lasting impact on generations of graduates, including prominent alumnus and benefactor Thomas R. Kline, whose support helped make the award possible.

Barton’s tenure as dean has been marked by a focus on academic excellence, student outcomes and institutional momentum. Under her leadership, Duquesne Kline Law has advanced initiatives to enhance professional preparation, expanded experiential learning opportunities and strengthened connections with alumni and the legal community.

“I am deeply honored to receive an award bearing Dean Sciullo’s name,” Barton said. “His legacy continues to inspire our work each day. I share this recognition with our faculty, staff and students, whose commitment and passion define our law school.”

Gormley noted that Barton’s leadership embodies the qualities that made Sciullo a revered figure at Duquesne: a commitment to academic rigor, a collaborative spirit and a genuine concern for every member of the law school community.

The award coincides with Barton’s reappointment as dean, underscoring the University’s confidence in her continued leadership and vision for Duquesne Kline Law.
