Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University graduates raised the bar again, exceeding the Pennsylvania July state average bar results for the 11th consecutive year. The recent graduates achieved an impressive 87.41% passage rate on their first attempt at the lawyer licensing exam. The Pennsylvania state average for first-time bar takers was 80.60%.
“The 2026 bar exam results are a source of pride for our university community and a testament to the strength of the Thomas R. Kline School of Law and its longstanding tradition of preparing graduates for success,” said Duquesne University President David J. Dausey. “We are proud to celebrate this achievement and the bright future it represents as our graduates enter the legal profession.”
Duquesne Kline School of Law graduates historically achieve high marks on the bar exam. With a robust bar studies preparation program, graduates enter the examination with the confidence and preparation required for this rigorous exercise.
“Our graduates are motivated and determined. We walk with them through this process step-by-step, providing intellectual and wellness support along the way,” said Ashley London, director of bar studies and associate professor of law. “We couldn’t be prouder of their grit and drive to become the next generation of ethical lawyer leaders.”
The Duquesne Kline School of Law bar studies program prepares its law students for the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), administered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Passing the UBE allows individuals to transfer successful scores to become licensed in other jurisdictions.
“The remarkable drive our students bring to Duquesne Kline Law transforms them into practice-ready attorneys, as our graduates prove year after year through their tremendous success on the bar exam. Most importantly, through our values-based education, I am confident that our graduates begin their careers with a strong ethical foundation and are ready to make a positive impact on society,” said April Barton, dean of Duquesne Kline School of Law.
Duquesne Kline School of Law will host a special ceremony on Friday, Oct. 23, to celebrate the 2026 bar results. Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Christine Donohue, L’80, will officiate the Pennsylvania Bar Swearing-In Ceremony at the historic Supreme Court Courtroom of the City-County Building in Pittsburgh.
Looking ahead, Pennsylvania will begin administering the NextGen Bar Exam in July 2028. London, along with other notable bar experts and law professors, will discuss preparation for the new test during the CLE/ CJE After the Exam: The Future of Legal Licensure and the NextGen Transition on Friday, Dec. 4, at Duquesne University.
“We will continue to robustly prepare our students for the bar examination,” London said. “We are excited to share the knowledge we have learned at this event to help others in the legal field with the transition of this exam.”
