President Ken Gormley and Provost Dr. David Dausey celebrated the President's Faculty Awards recipients, renewed and new installed endowed chairs, and professors who have taught at Duquesne for 25 years during the annual Faculty Awards Ceremony on Sept. 29.

Four faculty members were presented with the prestigious President's Awards for Faculty Excellence.

Dr. Derek Hook, associate professor of psychology in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, received the President's Award for Excellence in Scholarship. As an internationally recognized expert in Lacanian psychoanalysis, Hook has had a prolific career as a scholar who applies the psychological aspects of power to both his research and historical and psychosocial investigation of post-apartheid South Africa. His research productivity includes multiple single-authored monographs published by prestigious presses, several co-edited collections and countless peer-reviewed articles and chapters. Complementing his published works are a significant number of invited keynotes and conference presentations, including at the Harvard University Center for African Studies.

The President's Award for Excellence in Teaching was given to Dr. Autumn Stewart-Lynch, clinical associate professor in the School of Pharmacy. Known for her commitment to the development of innovative courses and laboratory experiences for Duquesne's pharmacy students, Stewart-Lynch also co-coordinated a Remote Community and Ambulatory Care Clinical Rotation in response to COVID-19 to fulfill students' requirements. She also developed and runs the Advanced Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice Experience, which provides students with important experience and supports underserved populations in the region. Stewart-Lynch also coordinated a certificate training program on diabetes for the Pharm.D. curriculum and has been a leader in the development of the online PharmD program. She also has precepted more than 350 student pharmacists during their final year in the pharmacy program.

This year, two faculty members received the President's Award for Excellence in Service to the Mission.

Dr. Jennifer Padden Elliott, associate professor of medicine and pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy, is the inaugural Ed and Karen Fritzky Family Chair in Integrative Medicine and Wellbeing, a role in which she actively works to amplify Duquesne's holistic health philosophy of providing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual patient care. As director of the Center for Integrative Health, Elliott spends a significant amount time in service to the school, University and community. Her continued commitment to help underserved populations includes work to address asthma, the most common chronic disease in children.

Dr. Kathleen Glenister Roberts, professor of Catholic studies and director of the University's Honors College, has dedicated her professional life to fostering Duquesne's Catholic Spiritan mission through the recruitment and retention of diverse, academically prepared students and the development of innovative curriculum through Honors Inquiry and Tutorial courses. She is committed to student success through scholarships and community partnerships, including her ongoing collaboration with the August Wilson House. Roberts' numerous service roles include chairing the College Diversity Committee, serving on the Founders Week Committee, and being the faculty advisor to countless student organizations.

The following were renewed as endowed chair holders during the ceremony:

  • Dr. Gerald Boodoo, associate professor of theology and director of the Center for African Studies, Liberal Arts: the Francis Philben Endowed Chair in African Studies in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts
  • Dr. Ryan Garvey, professor of finance, Business: the Donahue Endowed Chair in Investment Management 
  • Dr. Gerard Magill, professor in the Center for Healthcare Ethics, Liberal Arts: the Vernon F. Gallagher Chair for the Integration of Science, Theology, Philosophy and Law 
  • Jane Moriarty, associate dean for faculty scholarship and professor, Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University: the Carol Los Mansmann Chair in Faculty Scholarship 
  • Dr. Kenneth Parker, chair and professor of Catholic Studies, Liberal Arts: the Ryan Endowed Chair in Newman Studies
  • Dr. Jeffrey Evanseck, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, School of Science and Engineering: the Lambert F. Minucci Endowed Chair in Engineering and Computational Sciences.  

Four faculty members were installed as newly appointed endowed chairs:

  • Dr. Clifford Bob, professor and chair of political science, Liberal Arts: the Raymond J. Kelley Endowed Chair in International Relations 
  • Dr. Gokhan Sonaer, associate professor of finance, Business: the H.J. Halliwell Faculty Fellow  
  • Dr. Matthew Drake, associate professor of supply chain management, Business: the PwC Alumni Faculty Fellow
  • Dr. Aimee Kane, associate professor of management, Business: the William and Helen Lyons Faculty Fellow.

In addition, the faculty recognized for 25 years of service to Duquesne include:

  • Dr. Jeryl Benson, associate professor of occupational therapy, Health Sciences
  • Patrick Deegan, assistant professor of practice in business law, Business
  • Dr. Kathleen Hartzel, associate professor of information systems and technology, Business
  • Dr. Maureen O'Brien, associate professor of theology, Liberal Arts
  • Mike Tomoaro, professor of jazz saxophone, director of jazz studies and conductor of the Jazz Ensemble, Mary Pappert School of Music.
