The Department of Public Safety, in collaboration with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, has implemented a campus Stop the Bleed program to enhance the University’s preparedness and response capabilities in emergency situations.
A national campaign, Stop the Bleed encourages bystanders to become trained, equipped and empowered to help bleeding victims in an emergency before professionals arrive on scene. At Duquesne, Stop the Bleed kits and training sessions are being offered as knowing how to properly stop bleeding can save lives.
Stop the Bleed Kits
Stop the Bleed kits are located inside or near each AED cabinet across campus. Log onto DORI to view a list of locations. Each kit contains a tourniquet, emergency bandage, two rolls of compressed gauze dressing, two pairs of latex-free gloves, trauma shears and one permanent marker. Users can scan the QR code displayed on the AED cabinet for information about emergency situations or access this information by completing the training outlined below.
Training
Stop the Bleed training provides information about vital initial steps bystanders can take to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations. Training is voluntary and can be completed in two steps:
- Online Training: this free, 25-minute Stop the Bleed Interactive Course addresses the three methods of bleeding control using video demonstrations, interactive learning and spontaneous quizzes. The course can be taken multiple times.
- In-Person Training: Public Safety offers hands-on training for Stop the Bleed techniques. Participants will learn proper bleeding-control techniques using their hands, dressing and tourniquets. Online training should be completed prior to in-person training. Contact Public Safety at 412-396-6002 to schedule a session.
