Allegheny County Department of Public Works will close the outbound lanes of the Armstrong Tunnel, and the sidewalk within it, on Saturday, April 13, 2024. The outbound lanes connect Forbes Avenue to Second Avenue and the 10th Street Bridge. This closure is expected to last until at least late June 2024.
Also on April 13, the Armstrong Tunnel inbound lanes and the stairwell that leads from just outside of the tunnel on Second Avenue up to the Boulevard of the Allies onto campus will re-open.
Outbound traffic will be detoured from Forbes Avenue to Chatham Square, then to Fifth Avenue to Ross Street to Second Avenue. Essentially, the detour sends traffic that would have taken a direct path through the tunnel around the Bluff instead to access points south.
The closure of the outbound tunnel also will affect Duquesne’s shuttle services:
Southside Shuttle:
The South Side Shuttle will reverse direction of its continuous loop, beginning Monday, April 15, and remain in effect through the spring semester. Shuttle service will end for the semester Wednesday, May 8.
- During this time, the Southside Shuttle stops will now pick up and drop off in front of the Starbucks at the Duquesne Union.
- Shuttle stops along Muriel and Wharton Streets will be picked up on the other side of the street from their normal stops.
- The stop at 26th Street will remain unchanged.
Weekend Shuttles:
- While the direction of the weekend Southside shuttle loop also will reverse, stops will remain the same through the spring semester. Weekend shuttle service will end for the semester Saturday, May 4.
Shuttle passengers and commuters are encouraged to allow for extra time due to the change in traffic patterns as the city adjusts to the new routes.
