The Patricia Doherty Yoder Institute for Ethics and Integrity in Journalism and Media has partnered with four Pennsylvania universities to hold a first-of-its-kind event focused on the future of local journalism.
Slated for Thursday, May 15, and Friday, May 16, at the Hilton Harrisburg, the Keystone
News Summit will convene media professionals, nonprofit leaders, journalism educators
and policymakers to address urgent challenges facing local news and explore innovative
solutions for sustainability.
Duquesne University and Temple University developed the idea for the inaugural event
and enlisted the support of Penn State, Lehigh University and Point Park University
to explore four areas critical to the future of journalism: philanthropy in the newsroom,
diversified business models, university partnerships, and government and legislative
initiatives.
“The collaboration needed to bring the Keystone News Summit from concept to reality
has been inspiring to be a part of,” said Dr. Pamela Walck, director of the Yoder
Institute and associate professor of multiplatform journalism. “The summit represents
an opportunity to confront the challenges facing local journalism head-on by bringing
together an array of voices from across the industry to foster dialogue, share innovative
strategies and work toward solutions that strengthen local news in Pennsylvania and
beyond.”
Attendees will participate in keynote sessions, panel discussions, workshops and networking
events designed to foster collaboration and inspire action.
The summit will feature addresses by:
- Zach Metzger, leader of the State of Local News Project at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University
- Pamela J. Browning, president and publisher of The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C., the South’s oldest daily newspaper
- Steven Waldman, president of Rebuild Local News, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that advances public policies to counter the collapse of local news and revitalize community journalism
- Steve Stadelman, Illinois State Senator, 34th District and author of the Illinois Strengthening Community Media bill.
