Investigative Writer for The Athletic, Katie Strang, will be visiting on campus on Thursday, November 2nd.

Katie will be visiting Professor Bob Healy’s Sports and Media classes to discuss the ethical challenges reporters face in sports coverage and the ethical considerations of how not to re-traumatize high-profile victims of crime. She will also visit Professor Maggie Patterson’s Sex, Myth and Media class to discuss the challenges of covering a male-dominated beat.

Katie is an investigative reporter for The Athletic, a subscription-based sports website owned by the New York Times. A former collegiate gymnast, she rose to fame in 2017 for her court coverage of Larry Nassar’s trial. Larry Nassar, a sports physician, plead guilty to sexually assaulting athletes under the semblance of medical treatment while he worked as a physician at Michigan State University and was the team doctor for USA Gymnastics. Prior to The Athletic, Katie worked for ESPN and the Long Island newspaper Newsday.

This new speaker series aims to bring media professionals into the classroom for intimate talks with Media Dept. students about the ethical challenges in the field. While on campus, our guest speakers will also appear on a new podcast, Ethically Speaking... that focuses on meaningful conversations about media ethics with experts and media professionals.
