Carolina Frantz, MSN, RN, Director of Diversity and Inclusion and School of Nursing
BSN-AID program, received the 40 Under 40 Award from the National Association of Hispanic
Nurses (NAHN). NAHN’s 40 Under 40 program recognizes younger members of the organization
who are helping to fulfill NAHN’s mission
to engage the community and provide critical volunteer assistance at the chapter and
national level. The NAHN awards were presented in July during the 48th annual NAHN
Conference, held in Portland, Oregon. This year the conference focused on Strategic
& Sustainable Solutions for Transformative Health & Equity Inclusion in Nursing.
Frantz joined Duquesne University after a period as a faculty member at the Heritage Valley School of Nursing, teaching the leadership and critical care programs. She worked in various nursing and leadership roles at UPMC for 14 years, including roles within home health. Frantz is a founding member and president of The Western Pennsylvania Area Chapter of NAHN.
Frantz’s impact at Duquesne’s School of Nursing was immediate, as she worked to put a grant to use from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help support the BSN-AID program, which prepares diverse, baccalaureate-level nurses to meet the complex health care needs of the communities they serve. The program aims to improve the quality of care and address existing health disparities by increasing opportunities for diverse nursing students, including those who are from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in nursing or who are economically or educationally disadvantaged.
Frantz, who heads the support team for the Second Degree BSN-AID Grant, recently completed the first of three years of the $1.66 million HRSA grant. The first cohort of BSN-AID students recently graduated and several have already secured jobs in nursing.
Congratulations to Frantz on this impressive award and professional accomplishment.
