Biography

Dr. Alton Merrell is an internationally acclaimed jazz pianist, Hammond B-3 organist, composer, author, and educator whose artistry has inspired audiences throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Renowned for his lyrical improvisations, sophisticated harmonic language, technical virtuosity, and spiritually expressive performances, Merrell seamlessly blends jazz, gospel, classical, rhythm and blues, and contemporary music into a distinctive artistic voice. Whether presenting his own original compositions or commissioned performances celebrating the music of legendary artists, he creates unforgettable musical experiences that communicate hope, healing, and inspiration.

Widely recognized for his versatility as both a performer and collaborator, Merrell has appeared with many of the world's most respected jazz artists, including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Curtis Fuller, Hubert Laws, Antonio Hart, Tia Fuller, Slide Hampton, Sean Jones, Delfeayo Marsalis, Roger Humphries, Rufus Reid, Jimmy Owens, Jim Snidero, Sachal Vasandani, Kim Nazarian, Kenny Washington, and Jeff "Tain" Watts. He also performs regularly with many of Pittsburgh's leading jazz musicians.

Merrell is a member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra and has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Cleveland State Jazz Heritage Orchestra, Pittsburgh Concert Chorale, Youngstown State University All-Star Alumni Jazz Ensemble, and the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, demonstrating remarkable versatility across orchestral, chamber, and jazz settings.

Equally respected in the gospel music community, Merrell has performed with nationally recognized artists including Kim Burrell, David and Nicole Binion, Morris Chapman, Maurette Brown Clark, Darwin Hobbs, Israel Houghton, Donnie McClurkin, DOE, Martha Munizzi, Dorothy Norwood, LaShun Pace, Alvin Slaughter, Parkes Stewart, and the late Reverend Timothy Wright. He has been featured multiple times on the nationally televised Bobby Jones Gospel program and has served as orchestrator, arranger, music director, and conductor for numerous large-scale productions and oratorios incorporating gospel, Broadway, Brazilian and Latin, neo-classical, Caribbean, jazz, and world music traditions.

As a bandleader, Merrell leads The Alton Merrell Trio, an ensemble acclaimed for presenting what he describes as "spirit-filled jazz for the soul." His recording Withholding Nothing, released internationally on the Grammy Award-winning MCG Jazz label, showcases his signature blend of artistry, faith, and innovation.

A passionate educator and respected pedagogue, Merrell is the author of five instructional books with companion online courses that have helped musicians around the world develop their artistry and technical mastery. His publications include 30 Modern Bebop Licks: 30 Exercises to Help You Master Bebop Improvisation, Music Theory for the Improvising Musician, and The Complete Piano Technique Course (Books 1–3).

Merrell currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Jazz Piano and Musicianship at Duquesne University, Adjunct Professor of Music at the Community College of Allegheny County, and Founder and Lead Instructor of the Minstrel School of Music, where he mentors aspiring pianists, church musicians, jazz artists, and music educators from around the world through both in-person and online instruction. He previously served as Director of Jazz and Commercial Music at both West Virginia University and Youngstown State University and has also taught at the University of Pittsburgh.

Merrell earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Jazz Studies from the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in jazz piano performance and pedagogy. His dissertation, The Life and Music of McCoy Tyner: An Examination of the Sociocultural Influences on McCoy Tyner and His Music, explored the cultural, historical, and social influences that shaped one of jazz's most influential pianists. He also earned a Master of Music in Jazz Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Classical Piano Performance, graduating cum laude from Youngstown State University.
