Biography

Jack Howell, Principal Bass Clarinet of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, has served on the Mary Pappert School of Music faculty since 1996. He was Associate Principal Clarinet of the New Zealand Symphony, Principal Clarinet of the New Mexico Symphony and the Wheeling Symphony, and Second Clarinet of the Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Ballet, and Santa Fe Opera Orchestras. As a chamber and festival musician, he has performed with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Sunflower Music Festival, and the Western Slope Music Festival. He has performed as a guest with a number of orchestras, including the St. Louis Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Mr. Howell is a D’Addario artist and is author of The Lovely Reed: An Enthusiast’s Guide to Building Bamboo Fly Rods.
