Biography

Dr. Jason Scibek, PhD, ATC is entering his 16th year in the Department of Athletic Training in the John G. Rangos, Sr., School of Health Sciences at Duquesne University. He is an Associate Professor within the School of Health Sciences and is serving as the Chair for the Department of Athletic Training where he serves as the Program Director for the Athletic Training Program and Health Sciences Program. Dr. Scibek also serves as Co-Director for Kristen L. McMasters Motion Analysis Laboratory, which serves faculty and graduate student research interests in both upper and lower extremity biomechanics.

Dr. Scibek received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Exercise Science from Gettysburg College (1997), and his Master of Arts degree in Sports Medicine from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (1999). He spent two years working at Sacred Heart University before going on to pursue a doctoral degree in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan (2005). After completing his doctoral degree, Dr. Scibek spent one year at Eastern Michigan University, where he served as an assistant professor and Clinical Education Coordinator for their CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Program.

Dr. Scibek has been teaching in athletic training education programs for the last 21 years. His areas of instruction have included human anatomy, kinesiology and functional biomechanics, athletic injury evaluation, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic rehabilitation, exercise physiology and psychosocial issues in healthcare. In that time, Dr. Scibek has also been heavily involved in the production of ancillary items for 18 athletic training and physical fitness textbooks published by the McGraw-Hill and FA Davis.

Dr. Scibek and his collaborators have published multiple articles examining shoulder biomechanics in healthy individuals, overhead athletes and rotator cuff injured patients. His current line of research continues to focus on shoulder biomechanics and rehabilitation efforts surrounding scapular mechanics. His other research interests include lower extremity kinetic chain assessment, evidence-based application of therapeutic modalities and functional training for the purposes of injury prevention.

Dr. Scibek has published 20 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has presented and/or contributed to over 25 professional presentations in his areas of research expertise. Additionally, Dr. Scibek serves as a reviewer for several sports medicine and clinical orthopedic journals.

Dr. Scibek is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association, the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers' Society, and the American Society of Biomechanics. Professionally, Dr. Scibek spent three years (2009-2011) serving as a programming chair for the PATS Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium and six years (2008-2013) as an abstract reviewer for the American Society of Biomechanics Annual Meeting. He is currently serving as the chair for the PATS Continuing Education Committee. He routinely serves as a moderator and/or program reviewer for the NATA Annual Meeting. He was also a member of the inaugural program committee for the International Association for Ethics Education Annual Meeting.

Dr. Scibek is a licensed athletic trainer through the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine. He has 22 years of clinical experience, seven of those working at the Division I level. At the University of Michigan, Dr. Scibek served three years as an athletic trainer for the men's & women's swimming & diving teams. During his time at Sacred Heart University, Dr. Scibek spent time working with the track & field and wrestling teams. As a graduate student and undergraduate student, he gained additional experience working with swimming & diving and baseball at the UNC, as well as volleyball, track & field, basketball, soccer, and football at Gettysburg College. Dr. Scibek has also been active clinically working for SoccerPlus Camps and volunteering athletic training services at Duquesne University in the Department of Athletics.
