OCBE Milestone: 100+ Graduates

Led by a partnership between the chief OCBE officer and the Office of Human Resources, Learning and Development, the certificate program was designed to infuse and reinforce the University’s Spiritan mission of serving God by serving students so that they, in turn, may serve others. 

“This twice award-winning certification program is unique in that it infuses the very essence of the Spiritan mission into each course offered,” said Crystal McCormick Ware, chief OCBE officer and senior advisor to the president. “At the conclusion of the training, participants walk away with practical skills and competencies that foster innovative thinking, enabling them to apply these insights directly to their careers or community work.”

Participants earn their certificate through a series of 10 fundamental-level workshops offered over the course of the academic year along with completing a capstone project. Each in-person course includes subject expert instruction and interaction amongst the participants. Seven of the 10 workshops are required, and participants can then choose at least three of the 10 featured elective workshops.

The workshops address Duquesne policies as well as individual behaviors that help create an environment of opportunities for all at the University.

“What was remarkable about the OCBE Certificate program for me was how applicable it was outside of just my specific role at Duquesne,” explained former OCBE Office Coordinator Moses Lemann, a graduate of the program. “I found myself thinking back to the classes during interactions with my family, friends and neighbors. Beyond just making me a better employee, I feel that it has made me more empathetic human being overall, for which I am very grateful.”
