Helping Build Your Academic Career at Duquesne

The Center for Teaching Excellence supports faculty through every stage of their academic career. From teaching assistants at the beginning of their career to full professors contemplating retirement, CTE offers consultations, workshops, online resources and a library (searchable via Gumberg) to assist you at every stage of your academic career.

"CTE provides a marvelous blend of expertise and resources for teaching and learning with a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere in which we can grow and build collegial relationships as faculty."

Below you will find resources to find books in our library, get feedback on your teaching, explore balancing your life and work, discover mentoring opportunities, and succeed in promotion and tenure.

Promotion and Tenure (P&T)

Preparing an Effective Case for Pre-Tenure Review, Promotion, and Tenure

CTE staff are not involved in any aspect of the evaluations in the P&T process; however, we want to be sure that all Duquesne faculty have access to the policies and guidelines relevant to promotion and tenure. Additionally, CTE staff are happy to assist you in framing and understanding your presentation of your teaching accomplishments for your P&T portfolio. To schedule a consultation, please email%20us for general inquiries. For requests to work with a specific CTE staff member, you can find our individual contact information further down this page.

Each spring, CTE hosts a workshop presented by the provost and a member of the University P&T Committee. This session is designed primarily for those preparing their promotion materials. Sample successful personal statements and CVs are distributed. The session is also recommended for department chairs and anyone who mentors faculty and votes on promotion decisions. With the adoption of the new handbook, we are also hosting workshops on promotion in nontenure-track positions.

Recordings of the previous workshops are available to watch (requires a multipass). Upcoming sessions will be posted to our calendar as they arise (typically at the end of each academic year). CTE also periodically provides a similar session for non-tenure track faculty as well. Recordings and event announcements for those workshops can be found through the same links above.

Resources to Help Build Success

A mentor is more than a colleague. They agree to serve as a guide and ally for the mentee. Duquesne's Near-Peer Mentoring Exchange features mutual-mentoring groups with faculty members from across the University. We also offer shorter 'Mentoring in Minutes' sessions throughout the semester, in addition to our summer 'Entering Mentoring' program.

Learn More about Mentoring
Faculty and graduate students manage multiple roles on campus and at home.  Part of their success is learning to maintain a healthy balance between professional and personal life.  This requires attentiveness and diligence. It also requires making use of the resources available to you. We highly recommend that faculty make the most of the resources listed below:

Power Recreation Center

The University's gym and recreation center. Offers personal training, intramural sports, wellbeing activities, and group fitness classes for all students, staff, and faculty. Balancing work and the rest of your life means taking care of your body and finding activities that bring you joy outside of your work. While those passionate about teaching and research often find joy in these activities, that doesn't mean they have to, or should, be the only sources of restoration in your life.

University Counseling Center

Located on the third floor of the Gumberg Library, the counseling center offers services for students, staff and faculty. Counseling sessions are limited to students, but many group therapy sessions are open to faculty and staff as well. UCC staff regularly help instructors understand and delimit their role in responding to students who are facing difficult issues. They also co-sponsor events with the Center for Teaching Excellence.

Spiritan Campus Ministry

Offers masses, luncheons (e.g., during Lent), and small group studies.

Child Care On Campus
