Duquesne University faculty and students from a variety of fields conduct research, publish findings and present at national and international conferences on chronic pain. Their research has been published in many scientific and academic journals, including Scientific ReportsNanomedicine, The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists’ PharmSciTech journal, and the Journal of Neuroinflammation, among others. In many cases, students work closely with faculty to produce and present research at national conferences. In addition, faculty expertise has also been highlighted by national and regional media, including NPR and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

CPRC faculty member Dr. John Pollock received $21,436 from the Charles Henry Leach II Fund (2016-2017) to investigate the molecular basis of neuroinflammatory pain with nanotechnology.

Consortium members Jelena Janjic (PI), Benedict Kolber (co-I) and John Pollock (co-I) received an NIH Grant ($330,000) for their project "Theranostic pain nanomedicines: Imaging inflammation, reducing pain and need for opioids." The project is funded by the National Institute for Drugs on Abuse (NIDA).

Consortium co-directors Jelena Janjic and John Pollock directed a symposium on Nanomedicine at the 2015 American Pain Society meeting.  

PhD student Katelyn Sadler (Department of Biological Sciences) received an NIH F31 NRSA from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Kate works in the lab of Consortium member Benedict Kolber. 

Consortium members Kevin Tidgewell and Benedict Kolber received an NIH Grant ($394,000) for their project "Cyanobacterial natural products to treat co-morbid pain and depression." The project is funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).

The Chronic Pain Research Consortium has been awarded (7/2014) an inaugural "Provost's Interdisciplinary Research Consortia Grant" for FY15-16.  This grant supports research, education, seminars, and travel of consortium members and trainees.  

Consortium Ph.D. student Kiran Vasudeva (Department of Biological Sciences) gave a "Clinical and Basic Science Data Blitz" presentation at the 2014 American Pain Society Annual Meeting in Tampa Florida, April 30, 2014.

Consortium co-director John Pollock received an NIH Grant ($1,200,000) for his project "Partnership in Neuroscience Education."
The project will develop related multimedia (Apps, eBooks, & videos) for children and the general public to help strengthen understanding of neuroscience and the biology of the brain including pain as well as how the nervous system learns and remembers. 

Consortium undergraduate student Christopher Ignatz (Department of Biological Sciences) won the John C. Johnson Award for Excellence in Student Research at the Tri-Beta District Convention 3/29/2014.

Consortium co-director John Pollock (Department of Biological Sciences) is the creator and co-executive producer of the PBS show "Scientastic: Sleep," which debuted on PBS April 6, 2014. The show is supported with a website. Additional learning Apps and eBooks are also in production.  

Consoritum co-directors Jelena Janjic (Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences) and John Pollock (Department of Biological Sciences) co-chaired a symposium at the 2014 McGowen Institute Retreat entitled "Chronic pain and neuroinflammation."  The session included seminars by Janjic, Pollock, Gerald Gebhart Ph.D. (University of Pittsburgh), and Yoram Vodovotz Ph.D. (University of Pittsburgh).
