On May 5, the School of Business held its Spring 2023 Commencement Ceremony to celebrate the graduation of over 300 students. Family and friends filled the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse to watch more than 240 undergraduate and more than 70 graduate students receive their degrees.

Students, faculty, and guests listened attentively to Commencement Speaker, and School of Business alumnus, Marvin Balliet (B’79) who delivered a passionate address that offered outstanding guidance and advice. In his speech, Marvin encouraged graduates to always act with integrity and to spend time thanking those who helped them on their journey. During the ceremony, Marvin was presented with the 2023 Distinguished Alumnus Award in recognition of his successful career in the financial services industry. Currently he is Managing Director and Head of Global Stranded Cost Management at Citibank, a banking and financial services giant that had over $75 billion in revenue last year.

Alumna Cara Schlie (B’04) was also honored during the ceremony. She was presented with the 2023 Young Alumna Achievement Award in recognition of her career accomplishments. Cara is Vice President of Commercial Operations for Redsail Technologies, where she has been instrumental in driving the commercialization strategy and general management of clinical, financial, and transactional programs.

Dr. Dean McFarlin, Dean of the Business School, offered closing remarks asking graduates to stay in touch and reminding them that while they were students for just a few years, they would be alumni for the rest of their lives.
