Educational: Dr. Benson received a B.S. in Occupational Therapy and an M.S. in Motor Development from the University of Pittsburgh. She received her doctoral degree from Duquesne University.

Research: Her research focus is school-based practice, sensory processing disorders, and occupation. She is interested in the integration of occupation in pediatric practice and the occupational performance of children with developmental disabilities.

Clinical Background: Dr. Benson has provided occupational therapy services in both private and public school settings working with children, families, and educational teams. She currently consults with families and schools offering support and training for including children with disabilities in an educational setting. She has extensive clinical experience in the area of pediatrics, working with a variety of disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, and developmental disabilities across the lifespan. She has advanced training in the Neurodevelopmental Treatment Approach, certification to administer the Sensory Integration & Praxis Test, and is a certified infant massage instructor.

Personal Profile: Dr. Benson lives in the North Hills of Pittsburgh with her family.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy:  Occupation is defined as "doing" (Nelson, 1988). My teaching philosophy is based on the core beliefs of occupational therapy.....we find meaning and purpose in the act of doing or engagement. Courses are delivered via interactive lectures and discussions and the opportunity for experiential learning or "doing" whenever possible.
