Katie Westbrook 5K Race & Dog Walk

In Memory of Katie

photo of katie westbrookThe Duquesne University School of Law student body dedicates this race in memory of Katie Westbrook, whose dream at age 13 was to become a lawyer. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer, which took her life at age 15, just a few hours before she was to receive an honorary degree from Duquesne University School of Law.

Although Katie was never able to fulfill her dream of becoming an attorney, we honor her memory and dream to become a Duquesne Lawyer, with all race proceeds benefitting the Public Interest Law Scholarships.

If you are interested in becoming a race sponsor or donating a race day prize item, please contact Beth Bauer at

Thank you in advance for your help and support in keeping this race a successful event each year.

The 20th Annual Katie Westbrook 5K Race & Dog Walk

Held Virtually and in-person, on campus, on A-Walk

What a race!  We battled early morning downpours that would not allow the race route to be marked in any way during set-up, yet runners and dogs still came out to run and remember Katie. Father Simon blessed the dogs and the runners, and as soon as he was done, the sun came out and the race was able to be run without rain!  Our 20+ dog friends enjoyed special pup-cups of whipped cream and treats, prepared by our Animal Law Society "barkristas", and the pups were able to create paw print art for a $5 donation to Humane Animal Rescue. We had corn hole, lawn-sized Connect 4, a bake sale, a drink sponsor, snacks, raffles, t-shirt sales, popcorn sales, and a special rememberance/reflections of Katie from both her mom (Beth Westbrook Starnes), and Professor Rago. Please come out and join us next year!
