Biography

Dr. Mathieu-Sher is an Assistant Professor of Special Education in the Department of Educational Foundations & Leadership at Duquesne University. She completed her doctoral training at the University of New England with a focus on Educational Leadership. Dr. Mathieu-Sher also holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Maine with a focus on high-incidence disabilities as well as a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. Further, she has completed extensive coursework and supervised fieldwork in the area of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

Before coming to Duquesne, Dr. Mathieu-Sher worked at Clarion University as an adjunct professor in the special education department teaching courses focused on foundations of special education, specific learning disability, emotional disturbance and methods for high-incidence disabilities. In addition, Dr. Mathieu-Sher supervised pre-service field placements, special education student teaching placements as well as reading interventionalists.

Originally from Maine, Dr. Mathieu-Sher formerly worked as a school superintendent, principal, special education director and a special education teacher for student's Pre-K-12th grade. She currently holds active Maine State educational licensures in each of those positions. She also previously practiced as a BCaBA from 2014-2019. Currently Dr. Mathieu-Sher teaches courses in foundations of special education, high-incidence behavior, special education assessment, multi-tiered systems of support and also serves as the field coordinator for the departments special education field experiences and practicum placements at Duquesne.

Dr. Mathieu-Sher's research and teaching areas encompass dual interests in the area of special education and leadership. Her research attempts to understand how to best support teachers and administrators working with challenging student populations, specifically those who have been diagnosed with ASD and EBD that also engage in challenging and sometimes dangerous behavior. She also has interests related to ethical and compassionate ABA treatment practices, as well as reading interventions for students with ASD. Dr. Mathieu-Sher serves as a faculty advisor for the Counsel for Exceptional Children's Student Club.
