Enroll or Waive in SHIP Today

All Duquesne University students are required to have adequate health insurance coverage. The 2023-2024 Duquesne University student health insurance Spring Coverage is effective January 1, 2024 to July 31, 2024. The deadline to enroll is February 1, 2024.

  • Duquesne University partners with Gallagher Student Health to administer the Student Health Insurance Plan.
  • No automatic enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan for most students.*
  • Billing will occur at the time of  enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

*Athletes and international students are required to verify that they have appropriate health insurance coverage and will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan if they do not submit a waiver.

Health Insurance Requirements

If you already have health insurance coverage through your workplace, parent, spouse or other family member, please review your policy. If your current policy does not include the following requirements then you will be required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Your current health insurance policy must Include:
  • Insurance company must pay claims directly to healthcare providers.
  • Insurance company must pay claims in US Dollars.
  • Insurance policy documents must be available in English.
  • Insurance policy must be ACA compliant
  • Coverage must be effective no later than the waiver deadline and remain active through July 31 (no short-term policies).
  • If plan has a deductible (not the same as a copay), it must be no more than $5,000 per individual, per policy year.
  • Plan must include coverage for pre-existing conditions with no waiting periods or limitations.
  • Plan must include coverage in the Pittsburgh area for all services the University requires to be covered. (Emergency or Urgent care-only coverage does not meet this requirement.)
  • Plan must include coverage for all the following services:
    • Hospital inpatient and outpatient, emergency room, and urgent care services
    • Physician services (routine and specialist)
    • Diagnostic services, such as laboratory, pathology, x-ray, MRI, CT scan, etc.
    • Physical therapy
    • Emergency transport (ambulance)
    • Prescription medicines
    • Mental Heath
    • Illness or injury occurring under the influence of drugs and alcohol
    • Testing and treatment of illness from pandemics, such as COVID-19

Who Needs Health Insurance?

All Duquesne University student athletes are required to have health insurance and show proof of coverage. Athletes have the ability to waive the University's Student Health Insurance Plan if you have coverage that meets the University's requirements. Please note that insurance that is federally funded, including state Medicaid, Medicare and Tricare, does not meet University coverage requirements for athletes. Athletes who do not have appropriate coverage must enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

IMPORTANT:  Athletes who do not meet the waiver deadline will automatically be enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan.

All Duquesne University international students are required to have health insurance and show proof of coverage.  International students have the ability to waive the University's Student Health Insurance Plan if you have coverage that meets the University's requirements.  International students who do not have appropriate coverage must enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan
  • The health insurance has to comply with all the mandates of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and include state of Pennsylvania mandates. 
  • The health insurance plan must pay claims directly to healthcare providers in US Dollars and plan information must be available in English.
  • Coverage must be effective no later than the waiver deadline and remain active through July 31 (no short-term medical policies).
  • If plan has a deductible (not the same as a copay), it must be no more than $5,000 per individual, per policy year.
  • Plan must include coverage for pre-existing conditions with no waiting periods or limitations.
  • Plan must include coverage in the Pittsburgh area for all services the University requires to be covered (emergency or urgent care-only coverage does not meet this requirement).

Graduate students have the ability to enroll in the University's Student Health Insurance Plan if coverage is needed, or if current coverage does not meet the University's requirements. Graduate students who do not have appropriate coverage must enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Student Accounts automatically applies the 50% discount to single coverage, for eligible Ph.D. students who enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

The health and well-being of our students is important to us.

Athletes, and international students are required to either waive or enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan at the onset of each academic year. All other students should consider enrolling in the Student Health Insurance Plan if they do not have appropriate coverage.

For most students, Duquesne University no longer requires proof of health insurance coverage. Athletes, or international students still need to provide proof of health insurance coverage.

Yes. Duquesne does not automatically enroll students in the Student Health Insurance Plan. Each student must re-enroll in Student Health Insurance Plan at the onset of each academic year, as needed.

Upon enrollment, the one-time yearly premium/fee will be billed to your student account. For 2023-2024 plan year (08/01/2023 - 07/31/2024) the Student Health Insurance premium is $2,465.30. (Ph.D. students receive a 50% reduction in yearly SHIP premiums.)

Yes.  Plans are available for you and your dependents.

You will continue to have health insurance coverage through the end of the plan year, July 31st. Your yearly premium will not be reimbursed.

Duquesne’s Student Health Insurance Plan is a UPMC Health Plan that is administered through a partnership with Gallagher Student Health. Please review the UPMC Health Plan Summary of Benefits and Schedule of Benefits for more information about your health insurance plan.

Please make sure that your name is updated with the Registrar's office. Once your name has been updated with the Registrar's office, the name change will then be reported to Gallagher. Please reach out to UPMC at  1-866-918-1595 to inform them of your name change.
