Types of Work Study Jobs

Below are examples of the types of jobs available in the Work Study Program.  Currently open positions can be found here.

*Note: Due to confidentiality concerns, most departments will not allow candidates to work in the same department as the student's major due to confidentiality concerns. For example, a Pharmacy major may not work in an office assistant position within the Pharmacy Department. Therefore, candidates seeking clerical opportunities should choose a department not associated with their academic major.

 

Office Assistant

Job duties include:

  • Answer phones
  • File
  • Greet students and the public
  • Operate business equipment including copy machines, personal computers
  • Run errands on campus

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with typing and word processing
  • Ability to be courteous and speak in pleasant phone voice
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to dress appropriately for an office environment if necessary

Accounting Assistant

Job Duties Include:

  • Assist in preparation and analysis of specialized reports
  • conduct audits as directed
  • Operate business equipment including personal computers

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Excel, Word
  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior Level Accounting Major
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Communication - Marketing

Job duties include:

  • Design and execute promotional materials
  • Write letters, reports, or news stories
  • Provide photographic and darkroom support
  • Provide general office support and light typing

Preferred Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Artistic ability and/or experience in graphic design and layout, camera/darkroom skills, or mechanical ability

Communications - Production

Job duties include:

  • Use and maintain sound, recording and lighting equipment

Preferred Skills:

  • Mechanical, technical ability and/or prior experience or course work in production or production equipment
  • Experience with Audio/Visual Equipment

Communications - Promotional

Job duties include:

  • Conduct campus tours
  • Promote the University through recruitment and other activities
  • Provide general office support

Preferred Skills:

  • Sales experience and/or promotional ability
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Day Care

Job duties include:

  • Assist in planning and implementing daily activities of children
  • Greet children upon arrival and secure their possessions

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of PA State child care licensing
  • Major in early childhood development, special education, elementary education or human services field

Distribution and Delivery

Job duties include:

  • Sort and deliver mail, supplies, and/or equipment to University Offices
  • Maintain inventory, collect data and operate business equipment
  • Provide general office support, including answering phones, or greeting students and public.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to lift 20 pounds or more
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to deal courteously with University community
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Recreation

Job duties include:

  • Clean cardio and strength equipment
  • Ensure all patrons swipe their DU Identification Card before entering the Power Center
  • Rack all free weights and accessories
  • Assist with Intramural and Fitness programming

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to lift 45 pounds
  • Ability to deal courteously with all patrons
  • Ability to work varying shifts which may include early mornings, nights and weekends
  • Ability to carry out and enforce department procedures

Scientific - Lab

Job duties include:

  • Provide support for scientific research, labs, and equipment
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies

Preferred skills:

  • Prior laboratory experience and knowledge
  • Science, pharmacy or nursing major
  • Maturity and dependability

Scientific/Technical - Computing

Job duties include:

  • Work in Computing & Technology Services area to provide support of University's administrative and instructional computing
  • Work in computer labs to monitor and instruct others in use of computer lab equipment
  • Work in administrative or academic offices on programming tasks or assist in set up of computer equipment

Preferred skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Basic familiarity with computer hardware and software.
  • As needed by position, more advanced knowledge of or coursework in computer hardware and software.

Security

Job duties include:

  • Be responsible for maintaining building security in Living Learning Centers (LLC's).
  • Answer phones
  • Check and confirm identification of LLC residents and guests

Preferred Skills:

  • Maturity and responsibility
  • Ability to exercise good judgement
  • Ability to carry out and enforce procedures and regulations

Therapeutic

Job duties include:

  • Assist with setup, development, implementation, and follow-up of therapeutic programs and activities in off-campus organizations.

Preferred Skills:

  • Sense of maturity, responsibility, compassion, and creativity
  • Nursing, Occupational Therapy, or Physical Therapy major

Water Safety

Job duties include:

  • Serve as life guard
  • Perform water chemistry tests

Preferred Skills:

  • Valid Red Cross Life Guarding Certificate
  • Sense of maturity and responsibility
  • Ability to enforce safety procedures

Tutorial

Job duties include:

  • Provide academic coaching in reading, math, and other areas  to elementary, middle, and high school students in local schools.
  • Serve as a tutor in off-campus organizations and school

Preferred skills:

  • Sense of maturity
  • Ability to interact with various age groups ranging from elementary to high school
