Working Remotely


In the event that routine work or academic functions are disrupted due to prolonged campus or building closures, you may find it necessary to work from off campus. This page features useful resources for telecommuting and working remotely that are available to Duquesne University faculty and staff.

In preparation, make sure you test your access to the following equipment at home:

  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Microphone
  • Webcam
  • Internet.

If you do not have access to this equipment at home, consult with your supervisor.

Connect to Duquesne's network with a VPN

To access internal University resources, employees working remotely will need to use a virtual private network (VPN) client. A VPN client is an application on your computing device that establishes a secure connection to a secure network.

As stated in CTS's VPN service requirement, employees must use a University-owned and managed Windows or Mac device to connect to Duquesne's VPN. Employees also need to:

Call forwarding and voicemail

Set up call forwarding

Call forwarding from your desk phone to your mobile phone can only be set up while on campus.

  1. Lift the handset on your desk phone and wait for a dial tone.
  2. Dial *19 (start-one-nine) from your desk phone and wait for a dial tone.
  3. Dial *13 (star-one-three) and then enter the 10-digit number of the phone you want forward calls to.
  4. Wait for a confirmation response of three beeps. This means the phone number you are forwarding to has been accepted.
  5. Hang up your phone and then press the Call FWD key. Incoming calls to your desk phone will now be forwarded to the phone number you entered.

To stop call forwarding, press the Call FWD key.

To cancel call forwarding:

  1. Lift the handset on your desk phone and wait for a dial tone.
  2. Dial *73 (star-seven-three) from your desk phone.
  3. Wait for a confirmation response of three beeps and then hang up your phone. Phone calls will now ring to your desk phone and not be forward.

Access your voicemail remotely

  1. Call 412.396.4740 on your mobile phone.
  2. When prompted to enter your mailbox number, enter your 4-digit University phone extension.
  3. When prompted to enter your security code, enter your 4-digit security code for your mailbox.

Zoom video conferencing

Zoom allows you to have online meetings with anyone who has an internet connection. You can connect to a Zoom meeting using either audio, video or both. If connecting with a computer, participants can share and view each other's computer screens.

You can join a Zoom meeting using your computer, mobile device or by calling in from your phone. Visit to start using Zoom.

Web access to your University email

You can access your University email account by visiting or signing into DORI and clicking the Mail icon in the top right corner.

Remotely access, store and back up files

If you connect to Duquesne's VPN while working remotely, you can access and modify files store on shared internal drives.

If you are not using Duquesne's VPN, you can save and upload files using Box, the University's cloud storage service. Box allows you to access the latest version of your files no matter where you're located as long as you're connected to the internet. Visit to start using Box.

Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Employees are encouraged to enroll at least two devices in Duo MFA in case you don't have access to your primary device.

If you use your desk phone as your primary MFA device, we recommend enrolling another device, such as a mobile phone, YubiKey or hardware token.
