Community-Engaged Learning Design Day

The purpose of the Community-Engaged Learning Design Day is to give faculty dedicated time to learn about facets of community-engaged learning and to use supportive working sessions to design or tweak their community-engaged learning classes.

Meeting Location: Africa Room (we will break out to 608 and 613 Union later on)

Focus: Course Design

Refreshments: Coffee, tea and breakfast; Lunch served; mid-afternoon iced tea, water, and snack. 

Preparation: Review the agenda below so you can decide which session options you will attend. There is a track for those who are focused on CEL course design, some sessions on supportive resources and strategies that could be used in CEL courses, and some sessions that are specific to Pathways Teams.

Community-Engaged Learning 101

This is a primer on community-engaged learning. It is recommended for those who have never before attended a Design Day or the workshop on seeking CEL course designations.

Preparing Students: Unpacking Morton’s Typology

This session introduces a series of readings and features Keith Morton’s essay on charity, projects, and social change as a way to consider texts and discussions that prepare students for community-engaged learning.

11:00 – 12:30

Civic Issues and CEL Learning Outcomes

Africa Room, Led by Gaultier Fellows


This interactive workshop asks faculty to select and refine the civic issues and course learning outcomes that will be addressed in their class. Attendees work in small groups with Gaultier Fellows (Ken Havrilla, Pat Sheahan, and Erik Garrett)

“Doing” Community Engagement: Using Stanford’s Pathways to Service Online Assessment and the Wheel of Social Change

This session introduces two tools being used nationally that can help faculty structure community-based experiences and also help students reflect on how they might work with others to address a community problem.

For Pathways Teams: Creating a Culture Conducive for Community-Engaged Scholarship – Using the Engaged Departments Rubric

Teams will revisit the elements of the Engaged Department rubric they have chosen to address and draft a path of improvement in those areas.

Individual Course Design Consultation

608 Union, with Gaultier Fellows


Faculty can work one-on-one and in small groups with Gaultier Faculty to prepare classes for CEL designations or to enhance an aspect of their course design such as reflective assignments, community-based experiences, or student learning assessment.

Course-level Assessment

Participants will review the learning outcomes they have selected for their classes and work through a tool designed to structure assessment that results in evaluating student learning and enhancing course design. Participants will also be involved in revising a rubric to evaluate student artifacts that correspond to the first required CEL learning outcome: defining and describing a civic issue. 

Involving Undergraduates in Community-Engaged Research: A Q&A Discussion

Using PlaceLab and Psychology 480 (capstone) as an example, Eva will discuss with attendees the opportunities and challenges presented when undergraduate students work with faculty on community-based research projects. Attendees will share promising strategies and to get ideas for how to do community-engaged research as part of a class.

For Pathways Teams: Messaging the Community-Engaged Degree

Teams will learn about what students seek in a college education and work together to articulate how multiple community-engaged learning experiences will benefit current and prospective students. Teams will learn about the existing processes and resources that support messaging at Duquesne.
