Bio

Dr. Kim joined Duquesne School of Nursing in August 2019 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Kim received her BSN and MSN from the Pusan National University, South Korea, and she earned her PhD from University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Kim has participated in a variety of interdisciplinary research projects involving patients with diabetes, cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while developing an expertise in applying cutting-edge technology. Dr. Kim is particularly interested in exploring relationships among sleep, physical activity and psychological symptoms using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), an innovative methodology that captures real-time data in natural settings.

Having co-authored published articles on physical activity, fatigue and sleep disturbance, Dr. Kim has a long-standing interest in means of improving physical activity in patients with chronic disease and in developing related interventions for this population. Given her interest in physical activity among chronically ill patients, her doctoral dissertation study explored the impacts of sleep disturbance on physical activity in patients with COPD. To identify significant sleep disturbance effects on COPD patients' physical activity, she applied an advanced longitudinal data analysis method to real-time data collected using an EMA device over seven days.
