Biography

Joseph Badaczewski has been adjunct professor of jazz trumpet at Duquesne University since 2014 after performing a variety of music worldwide for over a decade. He received a Bachelor of Music performance degree from Youngstown State University, and is the only student to have held first chair in every Dana School of Music ensemble simultaneously. He also served as lead trumpet in the Ohio Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble before embarking on a year long tour in 2007 as a soloist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

After the GMO tour, he served as Sean Jones' graduate assistant at Duquesne from 2008-2009 while earning a masters degree, and performed often with jazz greats Roger Humphries, Dwayne Dolphin, and others. In 2008, he won the jazz trumpet chair with the Disney All-American College Band in Anaheim, CA and in 2009 returned to serve as the program's soloist and teaching assistant under USC professor Dr. Ron McCurdy. While in California he performed with music greats Rick Baptist, John Clayton, Steve Houghton, Jiggs Whigham, Wyclef Gordon, Gregg Field, Sal Lozano, Joey Sellers and Alex Iles, among others.

Joe lived in Los Angeles for four years and continued to perform at Disneyland, also expanding into Cumbia, Salsa, arranging and recording. In between these projects he undertook several long contracts in Singapore and Macau on trumpet, vocals, keyboards and percussion as part of the house band for the Marina Bay Sands and Venetian Resort.

Returning to Pittsburgh in 2012, Joe is one of the busiest trumpet players in the city and frequently travels the country. In 2015, he embarked on an international tour with Brandon Flowers of the Killers, performing for over 500,000 people during a five month stretch. With this group he travelled to Moscow and London, played at the Royal Variety Show in Royal Albert Hall, met Sir Elton John and appeared on the popular show "Strictly Come Dancing". He continues to perform with Brandon and helps to arrange horn parts alongside saxophonist Matt Berman.

In the past year, he performed at Robert Mondavi vineyard's 50th anniversary, recorded on the WYEP album of the year "Troika" by Meeting of Important People, arranged and recorded for vocal sensation Lyndsey Smith and Soul Distribution, played at blues festivals in Memphis and Hot Springs Arkansas with Barbara Blue, and became a member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Mike Tomaro. As part of the Electro-Brass-Thunderfunk group Beauty Slap, he was an artist in residence at San Francisco State University, performed at the Indy 500, and recorded musical spots for ESPN.

Joe continues to expand his boundaries as an educator. He has also been a faculty member of Santa Ana College and Youngstown State University, and is honored to currently serve the students at Duquesne University.
