Why We're Moving
Why are we transitioning away from Blackboard?
Part of Educational Technology's duties includes analyzing available technologies to ensure the University is using the best tools for student learning. During our routine analysis and our work with our consultants at Gartner, we determined that Blackboard was no longer the best-suited learning management system (LMS) for our institution. The decision to leave Blackboard was based largely on their lack of innovation over the last several years, their decreased level of support, and their decline in Standard and Poor's credit rating.
How did we choose Canvas?
In November 2019, Educational Technology conducted a survey to learn how our instructors were using Blackboard, which features they liked, and which features they felt were lacking or needed to be improved. We used this information when comparing leading learning management systems, including Blackboard Ultra, Canvas, D2L Brightspace. After performing this initial research, seeing demonstrations of each of the tools, and talking to other Universities who recently switched LMSs, we determined that Canvas was the best solution to meet our faculty and student needs moving into the future.
