FlexTech Teaching Strategies

Using the ceiling mounted WEBCAMS to share notes from the glass tabletops:  To share student writing, diagrams, and notes throughout the FlexTech classroom use the ceiling mounted webcams. Per the instructions, make certain students stand facing the front of the room when writing so their words are not upside down.

Classroom Activities:  Compliments of California State University, Los Angeles, Center for Effective Teaching and Learning Division, download 36 Active Learning Strategies in card deck form.  These activities cover a large variety of topics including "Divide and Conquer," "Affinity Grouping," and "Circle of Voices" to name a few.

File sharing: Use GOOGLE DOCS to share files so student groups can co-author and edit assignments. Use one document per pod and have students edit in real time or one document per class and have all pods edit in different fonts or colors in real time. It can also be useful for teaching students how to review writing in the whole group context.

Exhibition: Display full screen images on all the displays so the room resembles an art gallery. This is useful for comparing visual work and being able to see a variety of large images at the same time. Each image would need to be installed on the flat panels manually. EXHIBITION INSTRUCTIONS.

Group case studies: All work from project preparation to final presentation can be done at each pod using the computer for research, Blackboard access, and presentation development.

Comprehensive projects: Use a Jigsaw classroom approach (jigsaw.org) to coordinate a classroom assignment with each pod responsible for building part of the presentation.

Brainstorming Ideas: Use Padlet.com to generate and share ideas with the entire class. Padlet is a web based electronic bulletin board where all the pod computers can simultaneously collaborate in real time.

Polling and diagnostic quizzes: Use Nearpod.com, an innovative presentation and assessment tool for MACs, PCs and mobile devices. Presentations can contain quizzes, polls, videos, images, drawing boards, web content and PowerPoint presentations.

Student Presentation Training: Setup the class so there is one presenter at each pod. The remaining students will act as the audience to provide presentation feedback. The audience circulates throughout the presenters in 10-15 minute intervals so the presenters can modify or improve their presentations with the audience feedback before they make the final presentation to the instructor.

Welcome Slides:  Before class begins, configure all the pod monitors with the same creative slide to set the tone for the class.  (Use a flash drive at each pod to load the slide).  Pose a question, post a quote, display an image or any other type of content that will stimulate student thinking.

The free ClickShare app allows for simple content sharing with a click of the virtual Button from any iOS or Android device. This app enables users to easily share, annotate and save pdf, jpeg images or Microsoft Office documents to the classroom main display in the same way as the traditional ClickShare Button. Download the ClickShare app from Apple Store or Google Play, CHANGE THE WIFI SETTING ON THE WIRELESS DEVICE, click the virtual Button, and you are ready to share your content.

Using the latest version of the ClickShare app for Android and a ClickShare base unit, you can fully mirror the screen of your smartphone or tablet onto the main classroom screen. With iOS, you can use Airplay to fully mirror the screen of your iPhone or iPad onto the central room screen.
