Ways We Help Teachers
The University Writing Center is a resource for both you and your students. Below are the multiple ways in which we can help. To schedule visits, submit handout requests, or arrange a meeting, please email or call Writing Center Director Dr. Jim Purdy at purdyj at duq.edu or 412-396-1293.
- Give your class or group a 10-15 minute introduction to the Writing Center’s services
- Give presentations and in-class workshops about a range of writing topics (e.g., source use and citation, outlining)
If you would like to schedule a presentation for your class, please contact the director with the following information:
- The nature of the request (i.e., what kind of visit you are requesting)
- Course title
- Number of students
- Class location
- Meeting time
- Possible dates for the visit
We have previously offered small-group workshops on writing topics for students and teachers. Past workshop topics for faculty and teaching assistants include:
- APA citation
- Designing writing assignments and rubrics
- Teaching writing-intensive courses
- Using Wikipedia to teach research-based writing

Writing-Intensive Course Assistance
If you would like help developing a writing-intensive course per the University guidelines, please contact Dr. Jim Purdy, the Director. See the University Writing Intensive Course Requirement page for more information.
The Writing Center has a number of handouts available that faculty can request to distribute to students in their classes or programs. Handouts address a variety of global and local writing issues, including paraphrasing and summarizing, citing sources using MLA and APA styles, structuring paragraphs, and using commas and dashes.
Consultations with the Director
For feedback and suggestions about writing assignments and writing pedagogy and answers to your questions about teaching writing, you can meet with the director.
Individual Consulting Sessions
Encourage your students to schedule an individual consulting session at the Writing Center and read about how you can help them make the most of their sessions.
You can meet with our trained writing center consultants to get feedback on the clarity and effectiveness of an assignment sheet. You are also welcome to bring your own writing to the Writing Center. You can schedule a 30- or 60-minute appointment.
