Alum Receives National UCEA Excellence in Educational Leadership Award
Congratulations to Ed.D. Educational Leadership alum, Dr. Bryan O'Black, recipient of the University Counsel for Educational Administration's (UCEA) Excellence in Leadership Award.
UCEA is a consortium of top higher education research institutions with educational leadership and policy programs. UCEA is the leading professional organization for professors of educational leadership and it is committed to advancing the preparation and practice of educational leaders for the benefit of schools and children through promoting research, improving professional development, and influencing educational policy.
Seventeen education professionals across the nation received the annual UCEA Excellence in Leadership Award this year. UCEA asks its member universities to nominate recipients for this award. As a member university of UCEA, Duquesne University's School of Education nominated Dr. Bryan O'Black. The award honors practicing school administrators who have worked to significantly improve administrator preparation.
Dr. O'Black has spent 13 years advancing educational leadership and educational practice as a technology director, curriculum director, and now currently as the Assistant Superintendent of Shaler Area School District. Some highlights of his work include leading Shaler's primary school STEAM program for Art and Music in collaboration with the Art Education Collaborative and redeveloping the district's literacy framework with a research-based method of teaching reading to the district's youngest learners. His partnerships and involvement in professional organizations across the region and nation help bring the district valuable resources. Dr. O'Black has impacted the development opportunities for educational leadership at every level.
Pittsburgh's TribLive article featured Dr. O'Black's UCEA award he received this past weekend, presented by Duquesne University's Program Director of the Educational Leadership Program, Dr. Connie Moss. Dr. Bryan O'Black completed his doctorate in Duquesne's Ed.D. Educational Leadership program and his master's in the M.S.Ed. Education Administration program. Dr. O'Black currently serves as a mentor in the Ed.D. Educational Leadership program. Dr. Moss reflects on Dr. Bryan O'Black's work and leadership...
