Fieldwork & Doctoral Capstone

These web pages are designed to provide current/prospective students, and fieldwork educators with information about the fieldwork education and the doctoral capstone experience at Duquesne University.

Students must complete all Level II fieldwork and the capstone experience of the program within 12 months following completion of the didactic portion of the program.

Philosophy of Engaged Learning

Active & engaged learning is a crucial aspect of occupational therapy education. The Occupational Therapy Department of Duquesne University is committed to the development of practice scholars and utilizes fieldwork education and the newly developed doctoral capstone experience within the well-integrated curriculum continuum to promote advanced skill development in the core aspects of our mission through serving, leading, questioning and doing. Our faculty strongly embraces the concepts of Engaged and Transformative Learning and recognizes their value in developing practitioners that can be the leaders within our profession. We have integrated the core concepts of these learning theories within many aspects of our curriculum. Within entry-level occupational therapy doctorate programs, there are three levels of formal active, engaged learning:


Sites & Placements

Clinical education is available in a variety of practice settings and geographic locations. Students will receive access to a password protected online database to view current affiliations. Some travel may be necessary outside of the Greater Pittsburgh area. Students will be responsible for their own expenses for any clinical experience including uniforms, housing, transportation and travel etc... Please see the Fieldwork & Doctoral Capstone manual for info on process of out-of-state clinical placements.

Our community and clinical education team is growing! We have developed a collaborative approach in creating, organizing, and managing fieldwork and doctoral capstone experiences for our students.
