Our Fall 2021 Outlook

In times that are anything but ordinary, our faculty and students have been exceptional. In March of 2020, during a mandated closure because of COVID-19, our faculty quickly pivoted to teaching online giving our students the ability to complete their studies during that spring semester.

Our faculty thoughtfully and diligently demonstrated their commitment to education and to our students- developing new ways to engage them in online learning and checking in on them to ensure their academic and mental stability was intact during a difficult and unprecedented time.

Taking a Closer Look

"The faculty ensured that I had every single resource that I needed to be successful academically during the move to online education." Daniel Pollack, 1D

Given the green light to reopen for the Fall 2020 semester, health, safety, and education were at the forefront of developing a learning module that met the needs and expectations of all our students. We developed an innovative HyFlex option to reduce class sizes with half of our students meeting one day while the other half are online and vice versa. Recognizing the realities of a pandemic and the differing circumstances of every person, our students also had the option of attending class remotely.

"I ALWAYS have a front row seat in my online classrooms." Rachel McTernan, 1E

We walked alongside our students as they strode gracefully through the fall semester and into this spring semester as well. Our recent graduates, who had to endure changing circumstances and dates for the Bar Examination, were guided through the ever-evolving process by our Bar advisors. Our commitment to this critical component of practicing law is evidenced in our recent 6th ranking in the nation as a "Top Law School for Bar Passage."

"I was not worried about falling behind because I felt like the administration was doing its best to help us succeed, and the professors were doing their best to keep us calm as they were understanding toward everyone's different situations." Elizabeth Smith, 2D

Our current students have shown fortitude and resilience all year. They are embracing the socially distant activities we are providing-from our Duquesne Law Alumni Association trivia night; comedian with comfort care packages including mugs and mug cakes, tea, and hot cocoa; socially distanced student organizations fair and raffle baskets; to our virtual 5K. Our remote students have appreciated the care packages we sent, while our in-person students are grateful for the coffee and grab-and-go snack table we provide daily.

Our commitment to vigilance has been proven by our low COVID-19 incidence rates. While we cannot fully predict what the Fall 2021 semester will look like, we can guarantee we will be here for our students, providing them with the competences of a legal education while broadening their horizons.

"Attending most of my classes in person, I am extremely confident that the protocols put in place have kept my classmates and I safe." Kearsten Garbenis, 1E

Not knowing yet if the pandemic will peak or wane in the fall, we commit to providing our students with the same educational options as this current academic year. We can assure you we will continue to deliver to our students our high-quality legal education devoted to the Spiritan tradition-in whatever forms it will take. We will never lose sight of preparing our students to enter the world equipped with confidence, powerful networks, and respect for all.
