Information Technology Resources for Admitted/Incoming Students
Owning a laptop is now mandatory. It is highly advised that you purchase a new laptop for your time at law school. There is a One-Time $2,000 computer allowance in the total cost of attendance so that a new laptop could be obtained through your financial aid package. A new well maintained quality laptop should last you through the Bar Exam.
Many final exams are completed in a secured environment on a laptop with software from ExamSoft. You must make sure your laptop meets minimum software requirements by visiting examsoft.com/duq before purchasing a laptop. Pick more speed (i5 8th generation or better) instead of more storage.
You should NOT plan to use a company owned laptop as they typically have extra security software that will conflict with the functions of Examplify.
Recommended for new laptop purchases:
* Always Check Examsoft.com/duq for minimum system requirements before purchasing a new laptop
- PC/Windows - Name brand (Dell, Samsung, Sony)- Windows 10, 250GB SSD (solid state hard drive), at least 4 GB RAM (memory).
- Apple/Mac - At least a 13 inch size screen (MacBook Pro or MacAir) with at least 128 SSD, at least 4 GB RAM. AppleCare 3-year warranty.
Camera and Microphone
Some classes may be conducted online via Zoom for all or part of the semester. Your latptop should have a functioning camera and microphone so you can fully participate in remote sessions.
A small printer is highly recommended. It does not have to be an expensive All-In-One (copier, fax, scanner, printer) You do not want to depend on DCLI building access as your only means of printing.
Older computers can still be used for simple tasks such as word processing and reading emails. Do not risk important larger law school papers and exams by using outdated equipment. You must be prepared to work from home and keep up with communications.
Your Duquesne MultiPass Account
To securely access a number of Duquesne University systems you must first set up your account username and password, also known as your MultiPass. To establish your account, go to www.duq.edu/multipass and select 'Setup MultiPass' and follow the prompts to establish your account. If you need assistance, please contact the Help Desk at 412-396-4357.
Your Email Account
Your Duquesne email account is your primary means of communication between you and your instructors and classmates, as well as the official means for the University to communicate with you regarding account and billing information. Your email address will be: firstname.lastname@example.org. View the instructions to set up email on your smartphone, tablet or laptop.
Lexis, West Law and Bloomberg Law
Students will receive accounts to access these commonly used law research databases.
Microsoft Office (Office 365 Suite)
As a member of the Duquesne University community, you are entitled to download and install 5 licensed copies of the latest version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.). You may also install Office 365 Suite on your iPad or other mobile devices.
To prevent the loss of important papers, projects and research, you will want to have a file/document backup strategy. There are a number of free and inexpensive cloud-based products available that can automatically backup your documents once installed and configured.
- Microsoft OneDrive for Business (unlimited storage is free through your Duquesne email account)
- Box is a cloud-based file storage system where you can store and share files across multiple devices.
Campus Computer Store
As a Duquesne University student, you are eligible for discounted prices on a wide variety of computer equipment and accessories. The Duquesne Computer Store is located in the Student Union (next to the School of Law building) on the 2nd floor.
The store also can repair and troubleshoot laptop hardware/software problems for reasonable fees.
The entire School of Law and campus is equipped with wireless Internet access. Duquesne University's wireless network, named DuqNet, requires that you to authenticate with your MultiPass username and password. Do not connect to DuqNet Guest - it is a network for vendors and visitors.
Taking Exams on a Laptop
Exams are completed using Blackboard and ExamSoft software (the same software that is used for the PA Bar Exam). Please pay careful attention to the Registrar's instructions that are delivered each semester starting about 4 weeks before exams begin.
Public computers are available throughout the Law Library for your use.
The Law Library is home to two print centers (rooms 117 and 218B) which are connected to the public computers. Students can also install the Pharos software to print from their personal laptops. Students can print up to 3,000 pages per academic year at no cost (MultiPass username and password authentication required). If you reach this limit yet still have printing needs, additional pages may be conditionally approved by sending an email request to email@example.com.
Scanning and Multimedia
Document, photo scanners, image editing and OCR software can also be found in the print centers.
Electrical Power Outlets
Each classroom seat is equipped with an electrical outlet, as well as all study tables and carrels in the Law Library so you will be able to power/charge your laptop and/or other mobile devices.
CALI provides a collection of over 850 interactive, computer-based lessons covering over 45 legal education subject areas. A CALI Authorization Code is required. You will need your MultiPass credentials to access the CALI code.
