Appellate Moot Court earns National Recognition at Admiralty Moot Court Competition
Two teams from the Duquesne School of Law's Appellate Moot Court Board earned national recognition for their strong performances at the 2021 Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition during the weekend of March 24. Twenty-nine teams competed in the competition with Duquesne's team finishing in the final four.
Duquesne's team was comprised of Catherine George (2L) and Madison Maguire (2L). The duo was undefeated in all preliminary and quarterfinal rounds and narrowly lost in the semi-final round to a team from the University of Texas who ultimately won the competition. George also was recognized with another award as she received 11th Best Oral Advocate.
The other Duquesne team consisting of Hannah French (3L), Alexandria Iwanenko (3L), and Margaret Potter (3L) placed fourth for Team Oral Advocacy in the preliminary rounds; only five Team Oral Advocacy Awards were given. The judges were impressed by the team's cohesiveness and collective mastery of the legal issues involved. The team narrowly failed to advance. Martin McKown (L'15) coached both teams.
The Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition is one of the nation's most challenging interscholastic appellate advocacy tournaments. Legendary for involving complex and timely issues of law, this year's competing teams presented oral arguments about the maritime contract classification of an underwater oil and gas extraction operation. The teams presented their arguments to practicing maritime lawyers who sat as simulated panels of Supreme Court justices via Zoom.
Congratulations to our School of Law teams for their success!
