Kairos and Inception: On the Phenomenology of Insight

This public talk is about the moment when an intuitive understanding is sparked: catching a reflective insight, suddenly "seeing" the meaning of something, discerning a truth in an instant of writing, being struck by a thought (where did it come from?). Inception connotes origination, birth, dawn, genesis, beginning, opening. In his early writings, Heidegger already mused about the significance of inception, and how we need to open inceptual space and place ourselves at the beginning of this beginning, to witness the birth of meaning. Are inceptual insights events that we can methodically produce? Or, are they given to us? Do we need to prepare and ready ourselves for them? Or do they happen to us when least expected as if by a gesture of grace? Professor Max van Manen offers brief examples of the interplay between the moments of Kairos and inception in the writings of authors such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Blanchot, and Michel Serres.

Phenomenology of Practice

This symposium focuses on selected aspects of phenomenological reflection and writing. A phenomenology of practice comprises a range of possible methodical orientations for doing research. Professor Max van Manen pays special attention to some vocative features such as anecdote, example, image and pathic possibilities as well as focusing on the necessary preconditions for doing phenomenological analysis. Depending on the interests of the participants the speaker can address pedagogical themes or issues, and steer the seminar conversation in various directions. http://www.maxvanmanen.com/seminar/

Doctor Max van Manen is a professor emeritus (2011) at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. His interests include pedagogical theory and practice, human science research methods, the epistemology of professional practice, the phenomenology of writing, the pedagogy of secrecy and self-identity, pedagogical tact and contact, and the online experience of intimacy and interiority. His new book is Phenomenology of Practice: Meaning-Giving Methods in Phenomenological Research and Writing (published April, 2014, Left Coast Press). His publications have been translated into a dozen languages. He currently resides in Victoria, Canada.
