Title: "Sensing the City of the Present and Past"

Presenters: Gary Gumpert, Ph.D. and Susan Drucker, Esq. Communication Landscapers, Urban Communication Foundation

Abstract: From Aristotle and Plato, to media theorist McLuhan and architectural theorist Pallasmaa, the senses have been seen as providing the interaction between body and the external world. Whether it is sight, hearing, smell, touch, or sound the idealized
sensual relations nurtures and addresses each of them. The city and its structures trigger dimensions of both present and past - there are numerous phantoms to be found in any city, some of which are referred to as "ghost signs." This presentation will explore sensory experiences of the city as they change over time.
