Title: Towards Autonomy

Abstract: Robotic manipulation has saved lives by serving as a stand-off capability for the past two decades. In recent years, teleoperated robotic arms have become a critical tool for many missions such as Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Combat Engineering.As we enter the next decade, robotic capabilities will move beyond teleoperation and offer semi-autonomous and eventually fully autonomous manipulation. This presentation describes the computer vision and artificial intelligence related technological advancesthat will allow for the realization of this movement. The current research efforts which will be reviewed include placing robotic arms in the cab of construction equipment and cockpits of commercial aircraft to autonomously operate these vehicles in unconstrainedenvironments.
