202. Intermediate Spanish II. 3 cr.

Fourth semester capstone course designed to continue the developments of oral and written skills. Students will read and discuss selected cultural and literary texts, review grammar in the context of situations and readings, and explore cultural trends and issues. Prerequisite: 201 or equivalent. Fall and Spring. 

203. Costa Rica:  People, Perspectives, Possibilities. 1 cr.

Exploration of culture and community service in Costa Rica.  Students will study the language, people, history, political system, geography and the arts prior to the trip.  During their site visit, they will hone their language skills and examine contemporary cultural values, sociopolitical structures and economic conditions through volunteer work, cultural events and ongoing readings and assignments. Every other Spring.

211. Introduction to Spanish Culture.  3 cr.

In this immersion course, students will experience and discuss various aspects of Spanish culture, through visits to museums and cathedrals, meetings and conversations with local people, short trips and excursions, etc. In Spain.

270. Perspectives on the Holocaust.  3 cr.

Analysis of the Holocaust from a variety of perspectives (social, political, historical, cinematic, artistic, moral, etc.) to help students appreciate the enormity of the event.  A team-taught interdisciplinary course. Taught in English. Every other Spring.

271. Antisemitism. 3 cr. 

This course will explore the nature and history of the hatred and persecution of Jews (antisemitism) in western culture. It will pay special attention to the philosophical, sociological, psychological, and religious roots of antisemitism. It will also focus on antisemitism's most violent manifestations during the 20th century to the present.

280.  Spanish for Health Care Professionals.  3 cr.

This course focuses on teaching students to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients and presents everyday situations that medical professionals may encounter in hospitals, emergency rooms, doctors' offices, clinics, and pharmacies.  Emphasis will be placed on medical vocabulary, pronunciation, listening and conversation.  Students will examine cultural differences and nuances which impact health care.  This course does not count toward the language requirement.  It is limited to students in nursing, health sciences, and pharmacy. 440W. Good and Bad Women in Iberian Medieval Literature.  3 cr.

A time when women were seen as responsible for human sinfulness and represented the main threat for the perdition of the human soul, the Middle Ages made a clear distinction between good and bad women. Although descriptions of these two categories abound in the religious, legal and medical texts from the period, this course will focus on their representation in Iberian medieval literature (XI-XV). By examining the different characteristics and behaviors, both positive and negative, that the Middle Ages tended to identify as properly feminine, this course will reflect on whether in literature good and bad constitute absolute categories and whether a good woman could be bad or a bad woman good.
