My name is Sydnie Pennington. I am majoring in Political Science and minoring in Philosophy. I interned with the Southwest Airlines Governmental Affairs Department from September 2017 to December 2017. After a summer internship in the Washington, D.C. office of Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Frank LoBiondo (NJ-02), I found aviation related issues to be incredibly interesting. The airline industry is a heavily regulated industry, so Governmental Affairs plays a huge role within the airline industry. This inspired me to pursue an internship with Southwest.
During my internship, I had the opportunity to work with elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels of government. Given the nature of government and the scope of Southwest's operation, I was never without something new and interesting to learn! Every day I had the opportunity to deal with different issues ranging from appropriations to immigration to tax policy. I often wrote briefs on various issues for members of the Governmental Affairs Department and others across the company.
In addition to learning about the industry and the relationship between the industry and government, working for Southwest was an amazing experience. I got to live in Dallas, TX, and explore the entire country. While at Southwest, I traveled to St. Louis, Denver, New York, Kansas City, Oakland, San Francisco, Austin, Houston, Washington, D.C. and so many other places. The people I worked with at Southwest were kind, smart, and willing to teach-never did my many questions go unanswered!
