Recipients of the 2020
Chester A. Jurczak Excellence in Sociology Award
Chester A. Jurczak was Professor and Chair of the Sociology Department for many years prior to his retirement in 1988 and subsequent death in 2000. He was responsible for building the Department from a small contingent of faculty housed in a quonset hut on the Bluff in the 1950s to a broad-based liberal arts major with various undergraduate concentrations and a Master of Arts program by the 1970s. He dedicated his professional life to student learning both in the classroom and in service to the community and he built a faculty and Department that reflected such dedication. The Jurczak Award for Excellence in Sociology is given annually to the graduating senior(s) who demonstrates that same dedication to an anticipated lifelong learning process.
