International Affiliations

As a reflection of Duquesne’s Spiritan mission and identity, the Department of Theology has a historical commitment to Africa. Along with enrolling a sizeable number of African students in graduate theological programs, we also view it as important to maintain and develop strong institutional ties to schools on the African continent. Currently, the Department of Theology has also been closely working with the University of Chester, in England.

The Department of Theology is currently affiliated with the Spiritan International School of Theology in Enugu, the Dominican Institute in Ibadan, both in Nigeria, the Spiritan University College in Ghana and the School of Theology at Tangaza College, in Kenya.

Spiritan International School of Theology in Enugu
Located in Attakwu, Enugu, Nigeria, SIST functions both as a seminary and institute of theology. Its mission is to train priests and lay people for missionary work both in Africa and around the world.

Dominican Institute in Ibadan
Located in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, DI is owned by the Dominican Order in the Province of St. Joseph the Worker. It has a three-part mission; to "promote teaching and research in the areas of philosophy and theology," "promote a conversation with the world of sciences, arts and culture and religions" and "respond to Nigeria and Africa's need for integration and development."

Spiritan University College in Ghana
Located in Ejisu, Ashanti, Ghana, SUC's motto is "Spiritus Veritatis," "Spirit of Truth." The meaning of this is that "the whole purpose of education is to lead one to discover truth and wisdom." The mission of the college is to enlighten students about the human condition and to be in service of the poor and marginalized.

School of Theology at Tangaza College in Kenya
Located in Lang'ata, Nairobi, Kenya, SOT offers masters programs in Theology accredited by Duquesne University. The school's goal is to provide a "solid academic foundation with a dynamic pastoral and missionary orientation."

We are currently exploring the possibility of other partnerships, not only on the African continent, but also in India.

Review the University's initiatives to engage students and staff in projects with Africans.
