Civic Leadership for Social Justice

Then the minor in Civic Leadership for Social Justice may be for you. In the process of earning the certificate you will:

  • Sharpen awareness of injustice and violations of personal and human rights
  • Develop an understanding of civic responsibility in the local and global spheres
  • Gan knowledge and skills as a foundation for meaningful advocacy
  • Practice active and responsible citizenship

  • Understand better the sources of conflicts and methods of resolving them

The minor consists of 15 credits, including two required courses (an introductory course and a capstone course) and three electives. Descriptions of the introductory and capstone courses follow:

Introduction to Civic Leadership (or IHP 203W or THEO 261) is a civically-engaged learning, social justice, course that includes:

  • introduction to the neighborhoods of emphasis
  • introduction to community-engaged research
  • designing a community-engaged research project
  • working as a team to carry out the research project, in collaboration with community leaders and members
  • theory of social justice
  • introduction to mechanisms for social change
  • significant experiential civic engagement

Social Policy and Action is a civically-engaged learning course that must be taken after the introductory course and includes:

  • introduction to the formulation and implementation of social policy
  • individual projects that contribute to formulating or implementing policies to achieve social justice
  • development of an integrative electronic portfolio that documents how a student has achieved the three learning objectives
