Travel Abroad

Study for a semester in Rome or Dublin:

Our faculty regularly offer English classes to students studying in Rome, and many English classes at University College Dublin transfer in for credit toward the major or minor. Recent classes offered in Rome include "The Writer's Sketchbook: Creative Writing and Sketching in Rome" and "Food, Hunger, and Ethics in Contemporary Literature."

Spend Spring Break in a Foreign Country:

If you have thought about studying abroad but are not sure that you would want to do a full semester, you might be interested in a Spring Break Away class! These classes combine classroom instruction with a spring break excursion. Recent trips have taken students to London, Paris, and Canada.

We also offer Maymesters, during which students earn 6 credits over four weeks.

In Spring 2018 Dr. Linda Kinnahan traveled to Rome and Florence with students enrolled in ENGL 301W: "The Writer's Sketchbook: Creative Writing (and Sketching) in Rome & Florence." Students learned about different forms of creative expression (poetry, fiction, travel writing, sketching), and visited historic sites including the Pantheon, the Vatican, and the Spanish Steps.

In May 2018, Dr. Anna Gibson will travel to England for ten days with a group of graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in Nineteenth-Century Literature in England. Students will spend seven days in London visiting sites, exhibits, and museums related to Victorian literature and culture, from Charles Dickens to Sherlock Holmes, and from Queen Victoria to Jack the Ripper. From London they will travel to rural Hampshire to visit Jane Austen's village home in Chawton and the ancient cathedral town of Winchester, home of Arthurian legends and Austen's burial-place.
