Abner Jairo Ortiz Garcia

Abner Jairo Ortiz GarciaAbner Jairo Ortiz Garcia (M.M. Cello Performance, 2019) was recently appointed as section cellist in the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. Jairo graduated from Duquesne University where he served as principal cellist in the Duquesne Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.

Jairo has served as a cellist in the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Central American and Caribbean Youth Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Mexico, and as a guest artist within the Youth European Orchestra. Jairo has performed as a soloist internationally. His experience includes performances at Young Euro Classic Festival (Berlin), Accademia Musicale Chigiana (Siena), Santa Catarina Music Festival (Brazil), TCU Cellofest (Texas), Piatigorsky International Cello Festival (Los Angeles), and SphinxConnect (Detroit), Davenport Center (Toronto), the Sculpture Studio (Montréal) and with Les Si è cles at the Hector Berlioz Festival(La Côte-Saint-André, France).

In April 2018, Jairo was chosen to be the second City Music Foundation Mexican International Scholar, a scheme run in partnership with Anglo Arts (part of The Anglo Mexican Foundation). Supported by both organizations, he made his London debut in June 2018. In August 2015, Jairo received the National Youth Award, the highest distinction offered by the Mexican Government to young Mexicans. The award was given in recognition of his accomplishments as a cellist and for his work as Artistic Director of the Youth Symphony Orchestra "Silvestre Revueltas".

Born in Morelia (Mexico), Jairo began his playing career with the Children's Symphony Orchestra of Mexico. After attending the University of Michoacán, Jairo was awarded a full scholarship to study at Duquesne University (Pittsburgh, USA). He completed the Master of Performance degree under the tutelage of Adam Liu (Assistant principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra) in the Spring of 2019.
