Pete Zeldman Master Class
Drummer Pete Zeldman visited campus on September 11, 2017 and presented a master class on polyrhythm and rhythmic concepts. Zeldman is a native New Yorker who moved to Pittsburgh and immersed himself in the music scene. This lead to gigs all over the country, from New York to Los Angeles. Deciding that he wanted to pursue music, Pete went to Berklee College of Music where he met and started gigging with fusion bands whose members included Baron Browne, Vic Bailey, Stu Hamm, Steve Vai, and a host of other futures.
When Pete went back to Pittsburgh he got to play with some great artists at a jazz club called Heaven. These artists included Sonny Stitt, Clark Terry, Jimmy Ponder, Lee Konitz, Slide Hampton, and Lou Soloff. This was a great opportunity and was a welcome part of his early education. At the same time he was doing outdoor jazz festivals with American hard bop sax player Nathan Davis.
Zeldman is known for his uncanny ability to superimpose one time signature over another simultaneously. For an example of this, please visit his Youtube channel.
Mark Koch, jazz guitar faculty member, brought Zeldman to campus to present this clinic not only for percussion students, but for all students, noting that, "All musicians can benefit from learning Pete's techniques because they have specific applications to composition, orchestration, and improvisation."
Pete Zeldman currently lives in England where he continues to teach and present clinics.
