Student's Arrangement of National Anthem Played at Major Sporting Events
On September 17, 2017, the Steelers hosted the Minnesota Vikings at Heinz Field. This game wasn't just the Steeler's home opener, but was also the first of two professional sporting events that Jonathan Craig's arrangement of National Anthem was performed.
Craig is a junior trombonist studying with James Nova, second/utility trombonist in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Craig's arrangement was performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra brass section, led by PSO Music Director Manfred Honeck, and was synchronized with a flyover by the 13th Bomb Squadron.
Craig's piece was also performed by the Duquesne Brass Choir at the Duquesne Night at the Pirates game on September 20, this time under the baton of Director of Bands, Dr. Robert Cameron.
When asked what the opportunity of his piece being performed at two professional sporting events meant to him, Craig stated, "It is, at once, exhilarating, enlightening, and humbling. Nothing can compare to the feeling of professional-caliber minds and players reading your dots on the page, whether it be an arrangement or original work. While at a loss for words, I can only express my deepest and most profound thanks to the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony for this opportunity, and to Duquesne University, James Nova, and Robert Cameron for entrusting the creation of this arrangement to me."
