The Duquesne Safety Initiative

The Duquesne Safety Initiative was developed in response to the Dow Safety Initiative, a partnership between Dow Chemical Corporation, the University of Minnesota, the University of California-Santa Barbara, and Penn State University, to change the safety culture in academic research laboratories. The main focus of the initiative establishes a team of students and faculty committed to developing programs which promote safe laboratory environments and procedures fit for carrying out cutting-edge research. The department works to attain a safe work environment by implementing the following practices:

  1. Performing an annual spring cleaning to reduce clutter, rid the Department of excess chemicals and hazardous waste, and perform general cleaning
  2. Presenting "safety moments" before every departmental seminar
  3. Distributing safety signage to post throughout the Department
  4. Publishing a safety newsletter
  5. Performing inspections of research laboratories to advise each other on best safety practices
