Ask A Student Diplomat: Summer Plans
Question: What are your plans for the summer?
Gregory Caspero: This upcoming summer will be very different for me as I look to begin my PYIV year in the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy. After the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) orientation week at the beginning of May, I will attend my brother's commissioning into the United States Navy as he completes his ROTC program at Penn State University.
In late May, I will begin my 10-week blended rotation at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, PA. Normal APPE rotations are five weeks, but I am combining my required acute care and required advanced hospital rotations into the same health system. I will be in the trauma intensive care unit at Conemaugh, which will enhance upon my education of treatment for patients in the critical care setting. This rotation will last until the end of July, so I will be in Johnstown during the work week, and come back to Pittsburgh on the weekends. Some weekends I will continue my internship at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, but on my off weekends, I hope to hike at different trails around Pittsburgh.
On a weekend in mid-July, I plan on attending a large-scale Christian concert on the mall of Washington, D.C. called Together 2016. Once my rotation is complete, I will be off rotation for the remainder of the summer, up until the day after Labor Day. During this time, I will continue to work at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and go on vacation to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. I believe that this summer will have the perfect balance between school requirements, working at my internship, and relaxation, and I am looking forward to what lies ahead.
