What is a STEM designation?
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) federal agency regularly updates a list of academic fields of study that are officially recognized as being a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) major. This designation primarily impacts F-1 students Optional Practical Training (OPT) postgraduate employment benefit.
While all F-1 students are entitled to one full year of OPT, students who graduate from a STEM designated major have the option to apply for an extension to their OPT after completing their first year. This STEM Extension adds an additional two years to a student’s OPT, for a total of three years.
